Me / Her
solo exhibition at Tallinn Art Hall Gallery
09.05 - 13.05.2023
"Me / Her" explores the relationship between two bodies - "me" and "her".
By opening up the space for individual associations and subjective choices, "Me / Her" also
raises the question of the limits and possibilities of human compassion and empathy.

In autumn 2021, the Lab of Figurative Thought conducted an experiment on the theme of "beautiful/ugly". The experiment consisted of two tasks: to create a complete composition series, documenting a freely chosen section of the reality surrounding us. The second task was to "break down the complete series into individual elements and decide whether the impulse from each individual frame was "beautiful" or "ugly". In the course of the experiment, the participants discovered that judgment is never absolute, and one judgment is likely to include the results of all the previous judgments.
The various works presented pose questions such as: What kind of transition does skin as a body contour represent? What is memory? Is memory stored in people or in the space around them? To what extent is it possible to portray the individual narrowly by aesthetic choices? Where does associative thought begin? Et cetera.
The exhibition was a full scale video installation, consisting of 14 different video works.

„Just as the mother's womb is the ultimate shelter and protective fortress, it also has mercy on the monsters within, in our deep wells. As the warmth of the carcass fades, they gather strength, leaving us to contain them. And so it is that we seek the balance between silence and pandemonium, throughout the whole of life's arc.“ (Mark Raidpere)

The action "5x5x5" is the first creative exploration of the Lab of Figurative Thought, exploring different layers of meaning through deconstruction/body/space tasks.
During these five days, 5 students of the stenography department at the EKA Gallery worked for 5 hours each day under the eyes of an audience on different mask/deconstruction/body/space tasks, projecting the results of their work directly onto large screens on the gallery walls. The on-site (de)constructed characters also perform live performances.
The gallery was transformed into a studio space equipped with video and photographic equipment, which was reconstructed in the course of the activity to create the living environments needed for the different characters.
