ME / HER (2024)
solo exhibition
"Me / Her" explores the relationship between two bodies - "me" and "her". By opening up the space for individual associations and subjective choices,
"Me / Her" also raises the question of the limits and possibilities of human compassion and empathy.
Me: 157 cm, 65 kg, light brown hair, grey eyes, 3 holes, warm
Her: 90 cm, 20 kg, bald, brown eyes, gel nails, 3 holes, cold
I am big, she is small
I am full, she is empty
I am trying to be like her
Her body stands in for my body
I start moving her
Slowly I’m finding her a pose
We stop
She doesn’t move, I breathe
We are in a liminal zone
In a place charged with emptiness
A place that fills with reflection
She takes over my vitality
Her body is intense
Two naked bodies are intense
Her upper body like woman’s
and lower body like child’s.
There is tension trapped in her body,
a schizophrenic symbiosis
Aversion and empathy in turns
I feel no resemblance to her
Only by eye there’s a bond between the two bodies
Our difference is both big and small.
When I first picked her up, there were two young girls next to me. One was my age, the other a bit younger.
We decided to open the box together.
They didn’t know what was inside the box. When they saw her, the first thing they asked was if they could hold her.
“Why is she so heavy? She weighs like a child. She looks like a child. Why does she have big breasts?”
“Gosh, she has a hole in her mouth. And one more down below.”
“Now I don’t dare to touch her anymore.”
“But she has such a beautiful face, make-up and all.”
Next, I took her to a woman with two children. She held her in her arms in silence for a long time, just looking at her.
The woman couldn’t get over the feeling that what she was holding in her arms was a person. Tears came to her eyes.
The last thing I did was to take her to a young man.
The man held it for a while and then asked to take it away. Said he can’t look an object so disgusting so closely.
Meeting with the doll seller
I found the seller’s number in one of the ads and called him.
The seller said that all the dolls are sold out now, a new order should arrive soon.
When the goods are in Tallinn, he’ll let me know.
Three days later he notified that the order had arrived.
We agreed on a time and address so I could see the goods.
At the first meeting, the salesman was a bit shocked to see that I was not a man.
He was a man.
Ages 60+, dark-skinned.
With grey hair and a moustache.
Physically, the man was somehow weak, his movements lacked strength.
He seemed friendly.
He didn’t speak directly to me; he spoke as if to himself.
The doll was in the boot of a car in a large cardboard box.
The seller opened the box, showed me the wig, the clothes and let me touch
the silicone. The silicone was super soft.
I said I’d think about it and let him know if I’d buy.
At the second meeting, when it came to the transaction, the seller had already
accepted me and said hello in a normal loud voice as he exited the car.
He asked me to double-check everything before I give him the money.
I asked if the doll was from Japan.
He said China.
He added that at the time, dolls like mine are bought often. Lots of takers.
Whether it was sincere or salesman talk, I cannot say.
I asked him if he has any different dolls too.
He said yes and promised to send a catalogue.
Later he sent me a message with pictures of several other dolls.
These other dolls were bigger and more expensive.
I tried to contact the seller again six months later.
However, his number was no longer active and there were no more ads.
